Guide

Understand your Time Duration result

A time duration calculator shows how much time passes between a start time and an end time. It is useful for planning a work shift, study block, journey, event, or routine.

Results are for general information. Review the site disclaimer before using a result for an important decision.

Convert the times into minutes

The simplest way to compare times is to convert both into minutes after midnight, then subtract the start from the end. For example, 9:15 is 555 minutes and 17:45 is 1,065 minutes.

The difference in that example is 510 minutes. Dividing by 60 gives 8 hours with 30 minutes remaining.

Mark an overnight end time

When a shift or journey starts late and ends after midnight, the end time is on the next day. Marking that option tells the calculator to continue past midnight rather than treat the end as earlier than the start.

For example, 22:30 to 06:30 the next day is 8 hours, not a negative time difference.

Duration is not always paid time

A total time span may include unpaid breaks, waiting time, or a meal break. Subtract those separately when you need working time rather than the full time between arrival and departure.

For payroll, attendance, travel tickets, or an official deadline, use the calculator as a quick check and follow the applicable records or rules.

FAQs

Can I calculate an overnight shift?

Yes. Turn on the option that says the end time is on the next day.

Does the result include breaks?

It shows the full time between the selected start and end. Subtract breaks separately when needed.

Can I use this for a date range?

For whole calendar dates, use the Date Difference Calculator. This tool is designed for a time of day.
